Just to our south is Nasa’s Wallops Island flight facility and it has become the launching point for supplying the International Space station. This weekend there is a cargo launch scheduled to resupply the Astronauts on the International Space Station. The launch which was originally scheduled for the 7th is now rescheduled for the 9th. It will be a late afternoon early evening launch scheduled for 5:39 pm. These launches are always exciting and incredible to watch from the Delaware beaches. We have seen numerous ones over the years and we are always amazed at the sight and sound of the rocket blasting off into space. If you want a special treat drive down to the Wallops Space center to get a front and center view of the rocket as it launches from the space center.
Watch a live rocket launch from the NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center’s launch viewing area!
The Visitor Center will open from 1:30 pm- 6:30 pm on Sunday February 9th for the Antares launch scheduled for 5:39 pm. Visitors can grab a seat on the bleachers and watch as the Antares rocket launches to bring cargo to the astronauts aboard the International Space Station.
Perks of watching a launch at the Visitor Center:
-Lots of extra information from NASA sources
– Live audio from Range Control will be playing throughout the Visitor Center and the grounds
-Great view of the rocket from launch pad to sky!
-Live video of the launch pad playing inside
-Opportunity to check out the exhibits (including the new Science on a Sphere!), gift shop and grab a snack from the food trucks
-Restrooms
-Lots of inside space to stay warm and dry
Tips to have a successful launch viewing:
-Check for updates before traveling to your viewing location. Wallops social media pages, website and the Mission Status Center app are all good sites to check.
– Arrive early, but not too early! Security will begin parking at 1:30 pm, and early arrivals will not be allowed to park along the road to wait for the gates to open. The parking lot will close when filled.
– Visitor Center parking is limited, please consider carpooling! No oversized vehicles will be permitted on the day of launch- this includes vehicles towing trailers or other items.
– No parking will be allowed along Rt 175.
-No pets are allowed during launches.
